Do us part

I try not to follow celebrity hook-ups, breakups and breakdowns. I mean, sure, I sometimes see the screaming supermarket tabloids while trying to fight the urge to sneak a Twix bar onto the conveyor belt. But every now and then a celebrity breakup creeps into my consciousness and makes me say, “Aw, dammit.”

And earlier this week that breakup was Jane Lynch and Lara Embry announcing their divorce after three years of marriage. Say it with me, “Aw, dammit.” After three years of marriage, the women are separating and it bums me out. Because they seemed so very happy and so very happy together. And they were so sweet family with Lara’s daughter. But alas, not all things are forever.

This is both sad news and also sadly reassuring news. The sad part is obvious, because we all want to believe in the happily ever after. The sadly reassuring part is that gay couples are like any other couple – sometimes their relationships work and sometimes they don’t work. And it’s another reminder why legal marriage is important – not just for the benefits is confers with a commitment, but the clarity it establishes with the end of a commitment. The rights and responsibilities go both ways, and it is important for the law to recognize that as well.

I wish Jane and Lara well during what must be a difficult time. I hope it is as amicable as these things can be. I hope both can find lasting happiness. And in other news, Jane Lynch is single, ladies. Too soon? Yeah, probably too soon.

Time to Ralph

Remember when I said I didn’t see many movies in 2012. Well, I saw enough to know which was my favorite. It wasn’t any of the best picture nominees (because I didn’t see any of them, except for “Life of Pi” which did in no way make me believe in the existence of God), and it wasn’t “The Avengers” or “The Hunger Games” or “The Hobbit” or “Brave.” It was a little movie about a guy with really big fists and a girl with candy in her hair and how they both learned to be heroes. Yes, I know, I totally loved “Wreck-It Ralph.” Granted, I’m a sucker for animation and when you couple that with my fond thoughts of precious allowance quarters spent at the arcade during grade school, you have a movie I’d gladly watch again and again. A film as clever as it is fun, with morals baked in so carefully you’ll gladly take another slice. And, while it doesn’t have any overtly gay characters, it does have Jane Lynch. And that’s always a win for Team Rainbow in my book. The rest of the voice talent of John C. Reilly, Sarah Silverman, Jack McBrayer, Alan Tudyk and Mindy Kaling ain’t so shabby either. So this week instead of finally getting around to watching “Argo” or that movie where the vampires’ heads pop off like Barbie dolls, go find yourself a copy of the movie that’s just as sweet as it looks.

p.s. Wanna waste an afternoon? You can play the games too.

Supper time

[Click to embiggen the Holy]

I am not a religious person. I worship no gods except Tina Fey, Amy Poehler and Rachel Maddow. But sometimes, sometimes the spirit does move me. Particularly when presented with the Lesbian Last Supper. Say hello to Lesbian Jesus and her super gay disciples by artist Bronwyn Lundberg. So while the season of faith and a fat guy in a red suit may be over, let the holy glow of Ellen and her Queer Apostles Jane, Sandra, Rachel, Linda, Shane, Portia, Heather, Wanda, KD, Lily, Melissa and Rosie warm you during these cold winter months. Except for you, Australia. You have fun worshipping in your board shorts.

p.s. I love how all the actresses are named except for “Shane McCutcheon” as Judas. Love her Chucks though. So much more fashion forward than flip-flops.
p.p.s. For the fellas, there is also a the Creation of Neil gay Sistine Chapel for your viewing pleasure.

Gender Fuck Thursday: Fall TV Edition

You know what else fall means? Our favorite TV ladies returning to us, sometimes while wearing lovely suits. Sometimes for their respective TV shows, sometimes because ladies look nice when they wear a nicely tailored jacket. Whatever the reason, we can all agree it’s a win for us, the viewing audience.

Lindsey Shaw, Pretty Little Liars
Paige McCullers channels Marlene Dietrich and I like it.

Jane Lynch, Glee
Admit it, this is a vast improvement over the rack suit.

Anna Torv, Fringe
Seeing Anna with her hands shoved into her pockets makes me feel even more terrible that I stopped watching “Fringe.”

Lana Parrilla, Once Upon a Time
You Swan Queeners sure gave Rizzles a run for their money in the AE Femslash Thunderdome. Respect. Big time.

Jaime Murray, Warehouse 13
Each time H.G. returns on screen I scream “KISS MYKA NOW, YOU BRITISH TWIT!” But on the inside – mostly.

Ellen DeGeneres
Someone grabbed her tie in the dark that morning.

Naya Rivera
I don’t understand what’s happening with the crotch of her pants here. But I thank Naya profusely for giving me more reasons to stare long and hard in that general direction. Ahem.
